Clavicle bone which is commonly called us collar bone that connects the arm to the body located directly above the first rib, between your breastbone (sternum) and shoulder blade (scapula). We can feel the clavicle, because unlike other bones which are covered with muscle, only skin covers a large part of the bone.
Clavicle fractures are extremely common and that can occur in babies usually during birth. Children, adolescents and athletes can get fractured during many types of accidents and falls. They are common and occur in different ways. Some patients fall on an outstretched hand; others fall and hit the outside of their shoulder. Broken collar bones can also occur from a direct hit to the clavicle. In babies it occurs at birth during passage through the birth canal. The symptoms of a broken collar bone are patient have shoulder pain and difficulty in moving their arm. Swelling and bruising around the broken bone are quite common. At the emergency room, an x-ray will show the fracture in the collar bone. The nerves and vessels are rarely injured because of a broken collarbone.Treatment of clavicle fractures most commonly involves resting the affected extremity. There are several types of slings available; one commonly used is called a”figure-of-8″ splint. This is a brace that wraps around the shoulders to keep them back–like a soldier standing at attention. It is unusual for a clavicle fracture to require surgery, and most often an attempt at treatment in a sling is made. Surgery is required in some situations when either the skin is broken or if the fracture is severely displaced or shortened.

What is Sickle cell disease? It describes a group of inherited blood disorders. It is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells. It will block the small blood vessels in our body. At this stage all the tissue that does not receive a normal blood flow eventually becomes, damage which is the main cause for the complications of sickle cell disease. Mostly people suffered in Sickle cell disease have more hemoglobin in their red blood cells. That too an abnormal type pf hemoglobin in their cells which become crescent shaped and have difficulty passing through small blood vessels. Hemoglobin is the main substance in our body which helps red blood cells to carry oxygen from the air in our lungs to the parts of the body. People with sickle cell conditions make a different form of hemoglobin S (S stands for sickle). Red blood cells containing mostly hemoglobin S lifetime in a short period of 16 days only. They also become stiff, distorted in shape and have difficulty passing through the body’s small blood vessels. This is the main reason for blocking small blood vessels in our body. Treatment of complications often includes antibiotics, pain management, intravenous fluids, blood transfusion and surgery all backed by psychosocial support. Currently the only cure for sickle cell disease is bone marrow transplantation. People with sickle cell trait don’t have sickle cell disease or exhibit any signs of the disorder, but they can pass the gene for the disease to their children. Due to latest technology most kids born with this disorder grow up to live relatively healthy and productive lives.
